About
Established in 2014, the Charles H. Wharton Conservation Center (CHWCC) is owned and managed by an independent non-profit. CHWCC is located in northeastern Georgia (Towns County), surrounded by the Chattahoochee and Nantahala National Forests.
Dr. Charles H. Wharton, who purchased and built a cabin on the 129-acre property in the 1950s, was a renowned ecologist and conservationist. For more than 40 years, Dr. Wharton made his home in the Georgia mountains on this ecologically unique tract of land in the headwaters of the Tallulah River. Dr. Wharton dedicated his life to studying ecology, writing about the flora and fauna of the Southern Appalachians, and advocating tirelessly for the preservation of Georgia's wild places.
